Lake Como in August is world-famous. It is also, frankly, unpleasant for anyone who values privacy: the SS340 through Cernobbio is gridlocked before 9am; the Villa del Balbianello has 800-metre queues; the Villa d'Este boat pier resembles a ferry terminal. April, May and the first three weeks of June are another lake entirely. The azaleas on the Tremezzina peninsula are in full bloom, the mountains still snow-capped, the water glassy and cold, and the restaurants run by people who have time to actually remember your name. This is a guide to Como in its finest season.
April | The Azalea Circuit and Empty Roads
The Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo) opens its azalea season in late March. By mid-April, 500 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas are simultaneously in bloom across the estate's 8 hectares of terraced gardens, the most photographed botanical event in Northern Italy. The crowds that will descend by May have not yet arrived; private morning access (before 9:30) is achievable in early April with advance reservation. Our drivers know the via Regia, the old lakeside walking road that predates the SS340, which connects Tremezzo to Bellagio on foot, a 4-kilometre walk with no cars and full lake view.
Hotel rates in April are 35-40% below August. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d'Este, and Il Sereno are all available without waiting lists. Bellagio's restaurants, Ristorante Bilacus, La Punta Spartivento, have open tables and kitchen teams not yet fatigued by the summer surge.
May | Navigazione and Villa Access
May is the operational sweet spot: warm enough for boat trips (water temperature 14-16°C), cool enough for long walks, and the ferry and hydrofoil service (Navigazione Laghi) at full summer schedule from May 1 without the summer crowds. Private boat charter from the pier at Lenno or Varenna: a 4-hour morning circuit, Bellagio, Varenna, Villa Monastero gardens, Fiumelatte waterfall, back to Lenno via Villa Balbianello exterior, in a mahogany Riva Aquarama costs €1,400. Same boat in August: €1,900 and booked three weeks ahead.
Villa Balbianello (May-October, Wednesdays to Sundays) accepts private visits with advance booking through FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano). FFGR Italia holds a standing arrangement for Tuesday closures, private exclusive access for 1-6 people at 8:30am, the entire villa and gardens for 45 minutes before any public visits. Cost: €3,200 all-in.
June | Concorso d'Eleganza and the End of Privacy
The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este (Villa d'Este, Cernobbio, last weekend of May / first weekend of June) attracts 150 of the world's most significant collector vehicles and their owners for a three-day event on the villa's lakeside grounds. Access for non-hotel guests requires tickets that sell out within hours of release: FFGR Italia holds allocation for 4-8 people annually. For clients who collect or simply appreciate automotive history, this is genuinely one of the three or four most significant events on the European calendar.
By the third week of June, summer has properly arrived. The Como waterfront fills with weekend visitors from Milan (the city is 70km south); the SS340 restores its seasonal gridlock; hotel availability requires 8-10 weeks lead time for the top properties. For clients planning a summer visit, our advice: the private boat, the early morning, and the weekday schedule remain the solutions. We can arrange any of these, it simply requires more advance coordination than it does in April.
