Verona Arena Opera | The 2,000-Year-Old Amphitheatre and How to Attend Without Standing in Line

May 26, 2026 · 6 min read · FFGR Italia VIP Team

The Arena di Verona was completed in 14 AD under the Emperor Augustus. It has been used continuously for performances since the medieval period: the first modern opera season began in 1913 with Aida, conducted here to celebrate Verdi's centenary. Its acoustic properties, unchanged since the Roman period, remain the benchmark against which every open-air opera venue in Europe is measured. Attending correctly: from the right seat, in the right company, with a car that waits without timing pressure: transforms the experience.

Understanding the Seating Geography

The Arena di Verona holds 22,000 spectators. 14,000 sit on the ancient stone tiers (gradinate), the original Roman seats, uncushioned, accessible only by the original stone stairways. 8,000 occupy the Poltronissime and Gold categories: chairs installed on a wooden platform over the original orchestra floor, with three zones progressively closer to the stage. The Poltronissima d'Oro (Gold Platinum equivalent) seats are in rows 1-15 of the central platform, the acoustic sweet spot of the amphitheatre.

The difference between gradinate (the stones) and Poltronissima d'Oro is not merely comfort: it is acoustics. The Roman engineers tilted the stone tiers at 33 degrees precisely to reflect sound from the stage back to the upper rows. Sitting in row 14 of Poltronissima d'Oro, you hear the unamplified orchestra pit at a level comparable to a 600-seat indoor theatre. It is the most unusual acoustic experience in opera.

The VIP Box | What Exists and What Doesn't

The Arena di Verona does not have corporate boxes in the standard sense. However, it offers Tribune boxes: lateral positions at the top of the gradinate structure, enclosed with glass, with waiter service. These are allocated to Fondazione Arena di Verona sponsors and selected partner companies. FFGR Italia clients access Tribune boxes through our partnership with Fondazione Arena.

A Tribune box for 8 persons includes: 8 premium seats enclosed and climate-controlled, champagne service before and during interval, priority queue bypass for the pre-performance dinner at the Caffè Filippini (the reference restaurant facing the Piazza Bra), and a direct lift from the box to the street level for rapid egress at the conclusion. Tribune boxes must be booked 6-12 weeks in advance for the peak July-August programme.

The Programme | Which Productions Are Worth the Journey

The Arena season runs June-September. The founding production is always Aida, first performed here in 1913, it has appeared in every season since without exception. The spectacular staging (real horses on stage, Egyptian temple structures 15 metres high, cast of 200 chorus) is designed for the Arena's scale: no indoor opera house can accommodate it. Aida at the Arena is not Aida at La Scala, it is a different form of the same work.

Nabucco (Verdi) and Carmen (Bizet) are the consistent second-tier productions. Turandot is mounted in alternate years and is acoustically the most suited to the open-air amphitheatre: Puccini wrote it knowing it would one day be performed here. The closing night gala (typically second week of September) is the highest-attended single performance of the season and the only one to see if the choice must be reduced to one evening.

Dinner Before the Performance

Il Desco (Via Pietro San Sebastiano 7) is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Verona's historic centre, it has held one star for 28 years. Chef Matteo Rizzo serves cuisine rooted in Veronese tradition: risotto all'Amarone (60 minutes of reduction, Bertani 2015 Amarone), bigoli in salsa (Venetian-style anchovy pasta, served as the pasta course), guanciale con polenta Valpolicella (from the Valpolicella DOCG farms 20 minutes from the restaurant). We book 6-8 weeks in advance for opera nights.

Osteria Antica Bottega del Vino (Vicolo Scudo di Francia 3) is the wine list equivalent: 2,800 references, the deepest Amarone selection in any restaurant. Dinner here is not about the food (which is good but secondary): it is about drinking the 1967 Bertani Amarone (€380) that is not available anywhere else, including the winery.

The Logistics | Car, Hotel, Timing

Verona is 1 hour from Venice (VCE), 1h30 from Milan (MXP), and 45 minutes from Lake Garda. It is not a city most UHNW clients spend more than one night in, the visit is calibrated around the performance. A single opera evening means arrival at 17:30 (dinner at Il Desco, 18:30 table), Arena gates 20:00, performance begins 21:00, performance ends 23:30-00:30, return to Venice or Lake Garda.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost waits at the Piazza Bra (the square facing the Arena entrance): no parking issues on an opera night if the driver knows where the production vehicles stage. The egress at performance end has 22,000 people exiting a single street. We position the car 40 metres from the Tribune box exit, not at the main square. Departure is 8 minutes from final curtain.
