The Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site (2009) comprises 9 mountain systems across 141,903 hectares: the most visually extraordinary mountain landscape in Europe. FFGR Italia operates helicopter circuits from Cortina d'Ampezzo, Bolzano, Venice, and Verona, covering the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Marmolada glacier, the Sella Group, and the Latemar massif. Each circuit is managed with a licensed mountain guide on board.
The Dolomites UNESCO Landscape | What to See by Air
The Dolomites' visual signature is their pale-to-gold-to-pink limestone (dolomite rock, named after geologist Déodat de Dolomieu who first described it in 1791), which turns from chalk-white at noon to deep orange and crimson at sunset, the Enrosadira phenomenon. By helicopter, the circuits that are impossible to replicate on foot or by car: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (3 isolated limestone towers, 2,999m summit, vertical walls of 900m, visible from the Vienna basin on a clear day), the Marmolada glacier (Queen of the Dolomites, 3,343m, Italy's southernmost glacier, retreating 30m/year, important to see before 2040), and the Fanes Plateau (Ladino mythology homeland, accessible only on foot or by helicopter).
FFGR Italia's standard 90-minute Dolomites circuit (AW109 or EC135, up to 6 passengers) covers: Cortina valley departure, Tre Cime overflight at 300m altitude, Cadini di Misurina lake hover, Cristallo peak traverse, Tofane summit pass, and return to Cortina. We operate this route 3× per day in summer (07:00, 11:00, 16:30) subject to ENAC airspace restrictions.
Extended Dolomites Circuit | 3h Full Traverse
The extended 3-hour circuit adds: Marmolada glacier approach (with guide commentary on glacial retreat measurements since 1910), Sella Group circumnavigation (the 4-summit plateau that links the Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Alta Badia, and Val Badia valleys, the geographical heart of Ladin culture), Sassolungo (Langkofel) vertical wall flight, and the Odle Group (Geislerspitzen) above Bressanone. The extended circuit requires refuelling at Bolzano or Trento, included in the mandate.
For the Enrosadira phenomenon: depart Cortina at 17:45 in summer (June-September), reach Tre Cime at 18:30, hover for 45 minutes as the rock transitions from white to orange to deep crimson. Return Cortina 19:45. This is the single most photographed natural light event in the Alpine world. We limit this circuit to 4 times per week per helicopter (weather cancellation rate: approximately 30% in summer).
Cortina | The Helicopter Base
Cortina d'Ampezzo has two helicopter landing areas: the main Aeroporto di Cortina d'Ampezzo (LICD, 1,232m elevation, grass strip, IFR capable), and the Fiames helipad (3km north of centre, the standard VIP arrival/departure point). FFGR Italia coordinates all helicopter mandates from the Fiames helipad, the Rolls-Royce meet is 200m from the landing zone.
For clients combining the Dolomites helicopter circuit with an Olympic experience (during 2026 Games), we integrate the circuit with the post-race viewing: helicopter lands at Fiames after the Tofane downhill (women's speed events), FFGR Rolls-Royce transfers to the awards ceremony at the Olympic village. Total time from helicopter landing to medal ceremony: 18 minutes.
Venice to Dolomites | The Day Mandate
The most popular FFGR Italia helicopter mandate is the Venice-Dolomites day circuit: depart Venice (Lido VE-helipad, 07:30), fly north over the Veneto plain, arrive Cortina Fiames (08:15), 90-minute Dolomites circuit (09:00-10:30), light lunch at Rifugio Auronzo (2,333m, accessible by cable car after the helicopter descent, or directly by shuttle from Cortina), return Venice Lido (14:30). Total flight time: 1h45. Ground time in Cortina: 4 hours.
The Venice Lido helipad (LIDE, private sector) is 7 minutes by FFGR water taxi from St. Mark's Square. For clients at the Cipriani Hotel Giudecca, the helipad is 3 minutes by private Riva. We manage the water-to-air transition seamlessly, check-in time at the helipad: 5 minutes for FFGR-pre-cleared clients.
