Sicily Boat Tours | Stromboli, Favignana and the Aeolian Islands on a Private Vessel

May 26, 2026 · 9 min read · FFGR Italia Maritime Team

Sicily is not one island: it is an archipelago. The Aeolian Islands (seven volcanic islands, UNESCO Heritage since 2000) lie 25km off the northeastern coast. The Egadi Islands (Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo) guard the western tip where Rome defeated Carthage in 241 BC. Ustica sits 67km northwest of Palermo, alone in open sea. Each island has its own geology, cuisine, and color of water. Getting there by scheduled ferry means waiting in line at Milazzo or Trapani with hundreds of tourists. Getting there on a private Azimut 50 or Sunseeker Predator means leaving at your own hour, stopping wherever the captain recommends, and eating fresh-caught swordfish while anchored off Panarea at noon.

Stromboli | The Lighthouse of the Mediterranean

Stromboli has been in continuous eruption for at least 2,000 years. The Romans called it the 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean' because ships navigating between Italy and North Africa used its glow to orient themselves at night. The eruptions, Strombolian activity, occur every 15 to 20 minutes, launching incandescent lava bombs 100-200 metres into the air from three active craters on the Sciara del Fuoco (the fire scar on the northwest flank).

The correct way to observe Stromboli is from the sea, at night, aboard a private vessel anchored in the western bay. The official hiking trail to the summit (926m) requires an authorized guide and closes entirely when the alert level rises. From the water, there are no restrictions, no crowds, and the eruption view is unobstructed. Our Azimut 50 anchors 200m from the Sciara del Fuoco at 20:30 and stays until midnight, dinner aboard, Marsala in hand, watching the mountain work.

Favignana | Where the Sea Is the Color of Maldives

Favignana's Cala Azzurra is a cliché because it is genuinely, visibly extraordinary: the kind of turquoise water you suspect has been filtered in post-production until you're sitting in it. The island (15km²) was the center of the mattanza, the traditional bluefin tuna hunt practised since the Arab occupation of Sicily in the 9th century. The last commercial mattanza took place in 2007. The tonnara (the old tuna processing factory), built by the Florio family in 1859, now houses a museum and, in its former curing halls, a restaurant serving bluefin tuna and local fish in the setting where the catch was processed for 150 years.

We depart Trapani at 7am on a traditional wooden gozzo, the standard vessel of Sicilian fishermen since the Greek period. The crossing takes 35 minutes. The day covers: Cala Azzurra (swimming, snorkeling, 15-metre visibility), the Grotta del Genovese (Levanzo island, Paleolithic cave art c. 10,000 BC, accessible by separate coordination), and lunch at the tonnara restaurant, branzino with Sicilian capers, tuna carpaccio, pasta con le sarde. Return to Trapani at 18:30.

Ustica | Italy's First Marine Reserve

Ustica was designated Italy's first marine reserve (Riserva Naturale Marina di Ustica) in 1987, before the concept became fashionable. The result, 35 years later, is underwater visibility of 30 to 70 metres: among the best in the Mediterranean. The reef system supports groupers, moray eels, octopuses, sea bream, amberjack, and, at depth, large Mediterranean lobsters. The coral (Corallium rubrum, red coral) was commercially harvested until the reserve created no-take zones.

Our glass-bottom boat (12 passengers) gives non-divers a clear view of the shallower reef systems. For certified divers, we coordinate with Centro Immersioni Ustica for dual-tank dives to the wrecks in the Area C (restricted professional zone, accessible with coordination). The crossing from Palermo takes 2h30 by fast ferry: we coordinate your departure and return, with a private picnic lunch sourced from Palermo's Ballarò market that morning.

Panarea | The Smallest and Most Exclusive Aeolian Island

Panarea is 3.34 km². No cars are permitted, only electric golf carts. The permanent population is under 300. The seasonal population, in July and August, includes a specific category of Italian and international client that prefers islands where the access barrier is sufficient to filter the crowd. Robert De Niro owns a villa. Naomi Campbell has visited repeatedly. The Bridge Bar at the marina serves the aperitivo that everyone on the island ends up at between 19:00 and 21:00.

Cala Junco is Panarea's most photographed cove, 150 metres of white pebbles framed by volcanic rock, accessible by boat only. The underwater thermal springs in the bay of San Pietro (near the Basiluzzo islet) are a geological anomaly: gas bubbles rising from the seafloor, warm water columns, and mineral deposits that create a surreal snorkeling environment. Our Sunseeker Predator 63 (3 cabins, sleeps 6) can anchor overnight in the bay, the island has no berthing monopoly on the sea itself.

Booking Logic | What You Actually Need to Know

Full-day Aeolian Islands circuits (Stromboli + Vulcano + Lipari) run €4,800 per vessel, captain included, up to 12 passengers. Favignana day trips run €2,200. Ustica runs €3,100. All prices include the captain, fuel, and any port coordination: not the onboard catering, which we source separately from local markets at cost.

The Aeolian crossing should not be attempted in Tramontane winds above 25 knots: the sea state between Milazzo and Stromboli becomes uncomfortable even on a 50-foot yacht. We monitor weather 72 hours ahead and will reschedule proactively, not reactively. Panarea overnight itineraries require a minimum 2-night commitment: arriving at noon and leaving before sunset misses the entire point of the island.
