Capri has no airport, no through road, and no way to bring a private car onto the island. What it does have is a hydrofoil from Naples in 50 minutes, a helicopter pad above Anacapri, and a system of funicolare, private minibus, and golf cart that separates the guests at Il Capri Dream from the guests at Villa Brunella. Understanding that system is the difference between a good day on the island and a great one.
Getting There — The Four Options
The hydrofoil from Naples Molo Beverello to Capri's Marina Grande takes 50 minutes. In high season (June through September), the 8am and 9am departures fill 48 hours in advance. Our operations desk pre-books seats as part of the overall day package — you do not queue. For clients arriving directly from the Amalfi Coast, a private boat transfer from Positano takes 35 minutes, from Amalfi 55 minutes; this eliminates the Naples connection entirely.
The helicopter option from Naples Capodichino airport to the Capri helipad above Anacapri takes 8 minutes of flight time. It is the correct choice when a client's flight arrives at Naples with a tight connection to an island lunch or a charter departure. For clients arriving by private jet at Naples or flying in from Rome or Milan, the helicopter relay — private jet to Naples Capodichino, helicopter to Capri in the same ground transit — is the efficient sequence.
No Cars, No Problem — Island Logistics
Cars are not permitted on Capri. The logistics replace the car with a layered system: the funicolare from Marina Grande to Capri town (4 minutes, runs until midnight in summer), open-sided taxis for Anacapri (20-minute road transfer via the Via Krupp direction), and private minibuses for groups of 4 to 10. Our ground partner on the island coordinates the taxi and minibus layer from the moment of arrival at Marina Grande.
For clients staying in villas or at properties without direct road access (Villa Lysis, certain hillside properties above Anacapri), a pre-positioned golf cart with a dedicated driver replaces the taxi. For Punta Tragara and Il Riccio restaurant, the logistics involve a water taxi from the Piccola Marina — 5 minutes, operated by licensed island boats, coordinated by our island partner.
The Blue Grotto — Private vs. Queue
The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is the most-visited single site on Capri and in high summer the public queue routinely exceeds 90 minutes. Private access by water taxi before 9am, before the ticket booth opens and before the queue forms, is the correct approach. Our island partner operates a private boat at 7:30am from Marina Grande; the grotto entrance is unobstructed and the light — horizontal, aquamarine, most intense in morning — is at its peak.
When swell exceeds 0.5 metres, the Grotta Azzurra closes (the entrance is 1 metre high and requires flat water). The closure is unpredictable 24 hours in advance but reliable as a same-day assessment. Alternatives when closed: the Green Grotto (Grotta Verde) on the south side, accessible by boat from Marina Piccola; private coves by boat (Cala di Mezzo, below Villa Jovis) for swimming with complete privacy.
Villa Lysis, Certosa & the Private Access Points
Villa Lysis, the early 20th-century neoclassical villa of Baron Fersen above Capri town, is open to visitors but rarely crowded before 10am. Our ground partner coordinates after-hours or early-morning access for clients whose schedule permits. The Certosa di San Giacomo — the 14th-century Carthusian monastery — has a museum and cloisters that are accessible outside public visiting hours for private groups with advance coordination.
The private terraces above the Faraglioni — the three sea stacks that define Capri's silhouette — are accessible by boat from Marina Piccola. For dinner at Il Riccio (the Blue Grotto beach restaurant, one Michelin star), the approach by water taxi from Piccola Marina is mandatory; there is no road access. Punta Tragara requires a 10-minute walk from the via Tragara taxi drop-off, negotiated in advance for guests with mobility requirements.
High Season — August & Ferragosto
Capri in August is at maximum capacity. The hydrofoil is fully booked 48 hours ahead; taxis on the island operate at a queue of 20 to 40 minutes; the Piazzetta is impenetrable by 11am. For UHNW clients, the solution is either to arrive before 8am and leave before noon, or to arrive by private boat or helicopter and avoid the public arrival infrastructure entirely.
Ferragosto weekend (August 14 to 17) is the most congested period of the Italian summer on Capri. Our recommendation for this window: use the private boat from Positano or Amalfi, pre-book the Blue Grotto water taxi for 7am, have a confirmed table at Il Riccio or Da Paolino for lunch, and depart by 2pm before the return traffic begins. The island works beautifully at 7am and barely at all at 1pm in August.
How to Book
Book the sea transfer and island ground logistics simultaneously — the hydrofoil, the island taxi, and any boat excursion are interdependent. For groups of 4 or more, a private boat from Naples, Positano, or Sorrento is preferred over the hydrofoil: it arrives at Marina Grande on your schedule, not the ferry company's.
Confirm Blue Grotto conditions with our island partner 24 hours before the visit — early morning access is only confirmable the evening before based on overnight swell forecasts. For helicopter transfers, book through our aviation desk with a minimum of 3 days advance notice for Naples Capodichino routing.
