Lake Como is one of the world's most photographed lakes and one of its least forgiving logistically. The SS340 Lariana — the lakeside road connecting Como to Bellagio — is a single-lane ledge above the water with no overtaking, no parking, and no margin for error. This guide explains how FFGR Italia navigates Lake Como for UHNW clients at Villa d'Este, Passalacqua, Il Sereno, and the private estates above Tremezzo.
The Lake Como Road Problem
The SS340 Lariana is the spine of Lake Como — and its primary bottleneck. A single carriageway carved into the cliff between Como and Bellagio, it has no overtaking lanes, no hard shoulder, and sections where two vehicles cannot pass simultaneously without one reversing. In summer, a single broken-down truck creates a two-hour standstill. The ferry crossings at Bellagio-Varenna-Menaggio compound the problem: the car ferry blocks road access for 15 minutes at each loading cycle.
ZTL restrictions apply to Bellagio centro and several other lakeside villages from June through September. Only authorized NCC vehicles with pre-registered plates may enter. Our vehicles are registered and our drivers know exactly which approaches are open, which require permits, and which times of day to avoid the SS340 entirely in favour of the A9 motorway from Milan.
Cernobbio & Villa d'Este — The Grand Arrival
Villa d'Este in Cernobbio is one of the great hotel arrivals in Europe. The correct approach is from Como centro, not from the lakeside road north — a distinction that saves 20 minutes and avoids the tourist congestion around the Cernobbio ferry dock. For clients arriving by private aviation at Linate or by helicopter at the Milan Linate helipad, our A9-to-Como-to-Cernobbio route delivers you to the Villa d'Este portico in 35 minutes from touchdown.
For clients who prefer to arrive by water — and the lake entrance at Villa d'Este, via the private dock below the garden terraces, is arguably more beautiful than the road approach — we coordinate a private boat from Como's lakeside quay. The boat transfer takes 12 minutes. For helicopter transfers direct to the villa lawn pad (available to guests on request with prior villa coordination), Linate to Villa d'Este is 18 minutes.
Bellagio, Varenna & the Ferry Question
Bellagio sits at the exact centre of Lake Como's Y-shape, reachable by road only from the south (via SS340 from Como) or from the east (via Lecco). From Milan, the road journey is 80 to 110 minutes depending on conditions. The alternative is the car ferry from Cadenabbia or Menaggio — useful when our driver meets you on the western shore while your luggage arrives by road on a separate vehicle.
For Passalacqua, the Relais & Châteaux property above Moltrasio, the approach is tightly managed: the estate road is single-vehicle only. Our drivers time arrivals to avoid the turnover window (noon to 3pm on Saturdays in season). For Il Sereno in Torno, the hotel has its own private boat service from Como — we integrate with it seamlessly rather than duplicate the lake logistics.
The Private Estates — Discretion Above the Waterline
A significant portion of our Lake Como clients do not stay in hotels at all. The hillsides above Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, Lenno, and Griante are home to private villas that rarely appear in any registry, accessed by unmarked gates on roads that do not appear on consumer mapping applications. These clients require a different service: a driver who knows the gate code, the resident's schedule, and the preferred provisioning route from the Menaggio market.
For these engagements we operate under enhanced NDA protocols, with pre-positioned vehicles at agreed points rather than standing at the gate. When security personnel are present, our drivers integrate with the principal's existing detail without friction. Luggage logistics — including coordinating with private aviation for cases that exceed road vehicle capacity — are managed through our operations desk in Milan.
Milan to Como — The Correct Route
The A9 motorway (Autostrada dei Laghi) connects Milan Expo/Fiera directly to Como in 35 minutes off-peak. Never the SS340 for the full length from Como to Bellagio unless your destination is mid-lake and time is not a constraint — it takes 75 minutes minimum and doubles in summer. Our Milan drivers always use the A9 to Como and join the lakeside road only for the final approach to the specific property.
For urgent transfers — a client whose flight is late and whose dinner reservation is non-negotiable — the helicopter option from Linate Idroscalo to a Como-area landing point (coordinated with Como's lake taxi service for the final 500 metres) is the correct answer. A seaplane on request from Linate Idroscalo is a third option for clients who wish to combine the transit with the visual experience of the lake from altitude.
How to Book
Lake Como transfers should be booked with the lake boat leg and the road leg confirmed simultaneously — the two logistics are interdependent and a late change to one invalidates the other. For July and August, a minimum of 7 days advance booking is our recommendation; for peak weekend dates (Ferragosto weekend, Italian national holidays), 14 days minimum.
For multi-day stays, we offer driver continuity — the same driver for your entire Lake Como visit, who builds familiarity with your schedule, your preferred provisioning routes, and your household preferences. This is the correct approach for private villa clients and for hotel guests who anticipate daily excursions by road.
