Portofino has 500 residents, no through road, and in July it has 5,000 visitors. The harbour piazza — 80 metres across — is the most photographed in Italy and the most congested. The correct arrival is not by car. This guide explains the three ways to arrive at Portofino without being part of the problem.
No Cars in Portofino — The Basic Logistics
Portofino's access road from Rapallo is a single-lane mountain road subject to a ZTL that permits only authorized NCC vehicles, residents, and hotel supply deliveries. Standard rental cars are turned back at the checkpoint 3 km from the harbour. Even authorized NCC vehicles may only proceed as far as the tunnel entrance near the Castello Brown — the final 500 metres to the harbour are pedestrian-only.
The practical implication: your chauffeur drops you at the tunnel, your luggage is transferred to a porter service or a hotel electric cart, and you walk five minutes through a stone passage to the piazza. This is not a deficiency in the service — it is the only permitted sequence. Any transfer operator claiming door-to-door car delivery to the Portofino harbour is either uninformed or operating without authorisation.
Helicopter — The Preferred Option
The Portofino helipad, situated above the Castello Brown on the promontory, accepts private helicopter traffic with advance coordination through the Portofino harbourmaster. The flight time from Genoa Sestri airport is 12 minutes; from Nice Côte d'Azur airport, 25 minutes. From the helipad, the hotel will arrange a golf cart or porter escort to the Splendido or Splendido Mare, both of which sit within the pedestrian zone.
For clients arriving by private jet at Genoa Sestri or Nice, the helicopter relay is the correct sequence: jet to FBO, helicopter to Portofino helipad, golf cart to hotel. Total time from wheels-down in Genoa to harbour-side check-in is under 30 minutes. Our aviation desk coordinates the helipad permit, the golf cart pre-positioning, and the ground vehicle waiting at Genoa FBO simultaneously.
The Boat Arrival
A private RIB or traditional gozzo from Santa Margherita Ligure reaches Portofino harbour in 8 minutes. From a superyacht anchored offshore, the tender goes directly to the harbour dock — the only surface-level entry to the piazza other than the pedestrian tunnel. For clients staying at the Splendido Mare, the hotel has its own dock.
For clients arriving at Genoa or Nice by private aviation and preferring a sea approach rather than helicopter, we coordinate a private boat departure from the Genoa waterfront (30 minutes by sea to Portofino) or from Santa Margherita (8 minutes). The boat is pre-positioned at the dock and the captain adjusts departure time to match the aviation schedule.
Santa Margherita & Rapallo — The Mainland Base
For clients who prefer a mainland base, Santa Margherita Ligure is the correct choice: 8 minutes by boat to Portofino, direct rail connection to Genoa (35 minutes) and Milan (2 hours). Villa Durazzo and Grand Hotel Miramare are the appropriate UHNW properties. Our chauffeur waits at the Santa Margherita pier — not in Portofino — and manages luggage relay to the hotel porter system.
Rapallo, 5 km north of Santa Margherita, is useful for clients attending the Rapallo castle events or the Euroflora flower show in April and May. The Rapallo-to-Portofino approach by boat takes 20 minutes; by car to the Portofino ZTL checkpoint and then on foot is not recommended in season.
The Riviera Circuit
Portofino anchors the eastern end of the Ligurian Riviera circuit. To the west: Camogli (15 minutes by boat, the most authentic fishing village on the coast), Genoa Boccadasse (35 minutes by boat, entry to the city's old harbour). To the east: San Fruttuoso — the 13th-century abbey at the bottom of a steep valley, accessible only by boat or a 90-minute coastal trail — is the definitive UHNW half-day from Portofino. Our boat partner runs the San Fruttuoso crossing as part of a Riviera circuit that includes a private lunch at the abbey beach.
Cinque Terre by private boat from Portofino is a full-day itinerary: Vernazza and Monterosso are 90 minutes east by sea. For clients with limited time, Sestri Levante (45 minutes east) offers the Baia del Silenzio — a curved bay with no motorboats permitted — as an alternative beach destination reachable by boat without entering the crowded Cinque Terre ferry routes.
How to Book
The Portofino helipad must be reserved a minimum of 48 hours in advance and is subject to weather cancellation with same-day notice. For July and August arrivals, we recommend booking the complete sea-air-land package 10 days ahead: helipad slot, ground vehicle at Genoa FBO, boat standby at Santa Margherita, and hotel porter coordination.
For sea arrivals without helicopter, a 24-hour booking window is standard outside peak season; in July and August, the preferred boat operators fill 5 to 7 days ahead. Contact our Riviera desk with your arrival airport, preferred transfer mode, hotel, and date — we return a complete logistics plan within 90 minutes.
