Capri VIP Experience — Villa Jovis at Dawn, La Fontelina, and the Island Without a Car

May 26, 2026 · 6 min read · FFGR Italia VIP Team

Capri receives 7,000 visitors per day in July — on an island of 10.4 square kilometres with no private cars, a single cableway, and two towns connected by a road that is often the same width as a compact European car. The VIP experience of Capri is not about arriving differently from everyone else; it is about leaving before they arrive and being somewhere they cannot reach.

The Pre-Dawn Arrival: Marina Grande Before 08:00

The first Capri-bound ferry from Naples departs at 07:05, arriving 08:05. The first day-trip boats from Sorrento arrive at 08:20. The island is quietest — and the Blue Grotto accessible before the entrance queue forms — between 07:00 and 08:30. FFGR's Positano-based private boat (08:30 Positano departure, 09:05 Capri arrival) is timed to precede the Sorrento and Naples day-tripper peak by one operational window.

For clients based in Naples, FFGR coordinates a 06:30 private launch from the Naples waterfront (Molo Beverello) to Marina Grande by 07:10 — the quiet window before the island's single-bar opens for breakfast. The arrival by private boat to Marina Grande (rather than by hydrofoil to the tourist pier) uses the eastern dock approach, where the private vessels moor away from the commercial ferry traffic.

Villa Jovis: The Emperor's Palace

Villa Jovis (the largest of Tiberius's 12 Capri villas, where he retired in 27 AD and governed the Roman Empire for 10 years without returning to Rome) sits at 334m elevation on the eastern tip of the island — 45 minutes on foot from Capri town or accessible by the island's shared jeep-taxi service. The site opens at 09:00 but FFGR coordinates access to the archaeological zone at 08:00 through the Parco Regionale di Capri.

Villa Jovis is the least visited major Roman archaeological site in Italy (45,000 visitors per year versus 3.8 million at Pompeii) and the most atmospherically intact — the room where Tiberius held imperial audiences is still identifiable, the cliff at Salto di Tiberio (the 330m drop into the sea, from which legend holds enemies were thrown) is unrailed and visceral. The Faro di Punta Carena (Capri's lighthouse, southwest tip) can be included in the return route as a separate 90-minute circuit.

La Fontelina and the Club de Mer

La Fontelina (below the Faraglioni rocks, accessible only by 15 minutes of steps from Via Tragara or by water, no road access) has 28 sunbeds, a restaurant, and a reservation list that closes for the season in April. FFGR holds a standing reservation arrangement with La Fontelina's management — securing 2–4 sunbeds for arriving clients with 24-hour notice rather than the 4-week minimum that applies to direct bookings.

Lunch at La Fontelina (Chef Antonino Ruggiero, the freshest pasta-con-scorfano in the Tyrrhenian) is served from 12:30 to 15:30. The club closes to all non-reservation guests at 11:00. The afternoon sunbed position (12:00–18:00) with the Faraglioni rock in the sight line to the west is the most photographed private afternoon in southern Italy and the one most likely to resolve the question of whether Capri was worth the logistical effort.

Anacapri and Villa San Michele

Anacapri — the upper village at 275m — is quieter than Capri town by an order of magnitude, operating at a tempo closer to the permanent-resident island than the tourist destination. Villa San Michele (Axel Munthe's 1890 house-museum, the most visited private residence in Italy with 300,000 visitors per year) is best visited at 09:00 opening before the Capri-town buses arrive at 10:00.

The Monte Solaro chairlift (Anacapri–Monte Solaro, 589m summit, 12 minutes, panoramic 360-degree view of the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, and on clear days, the Calabrian coast) is the most dramatic aerial view in the Campanian islands and opens at 09:30. FFGR times the Anacapri circuit to combine the chairlift ascent (09:30), the Villa San Michele visit (10:15, after the chairlift descent), and lunch at Il Riccio (the beach club at Grotta Azzurra beach, Via Gradola 4, 1 Michelin star, 13:00 reservation).
